Sunwheel Energizes Urban California

Sunwheel Energy Partners’ first set of affordable housing solar projects in California will generate over 2.3 million kWhs of clean, renewable electricity annually, eliminating nearly two million pounds of CO2 emissions each year and lowering the cost of electricity for the 1,500 families living in these communities.

Green Jobs in Underserved Communities

The Plaza East site, along with several other San Francisco affordable housing solar installations developed by Sunwheel, generated dozens of green jobs with over 14,040 work hours. Sunwheel partnered with Real Goods Solar, the projects’ solar integrator, to participate in local jobs programs, such was SF City Build, that hire from the sites’ residents and neighborhoods. As a result, previously unemployed residents received on-the-job training and experience in green economy jobs,, bringing pride and numerous other benefits to their communities. These projects were conducted in partnership with the site owner, McCormack Baron Salazar, as well as the San Francisco Housing Authority

Local, State and Federal Programs Enable Solar Energy for Affordable Housing

The solar installations at Plaza East as well as two other federally subsidized affordable housing sites in San Francisco, Hayes Valley North and Hayes Valley South, were developed by Sunwheel Energy Partners and enabled by the California Solar Initiative’s MASH (Multi-family Affordable Solar Housing) program, PG&E, GoSolarSF, and federal incentive programs such as the New Markets Tax Credits and Investment Tax Credit programs. These projects implemented California’s new Virtual Net Metering tariff, allowing the electricity and costs savings to be shared with resident families.

Real Goods outfits 100% solar Caribbean resort

Mike and Petagay Hartman, owners of the Caribbean's only full-service, 100% solar-powered resort, came to South Andros, Andros Island in the Bahamas soon after they met on Valentine's Day, 1995. They fell in love with the pristine environment, and it was only natural that the Tiamo Resort grew from their desire to preserve and share their experience.

While planning and building Tiamo, Mike and Petagay took great care to have the least possible impact on the island's ecosystem, which sits at the third largest barrier reef in the world. The resort gets all of its power from a PV system has a daily electricity-generating capacity of more than 120,000 watt-hours and a battery storage facility totaling 4,075 amp hours.

Bungalows feature composting toilets that break black wastewater down into healthy organic peat; thermal heaters create hot water; greywater is cleansed via a dirt, sand and rock filtering system; and laundry is washed in biodegradable, phosphorous-free soaps and line-dried in the sweet Bahamian air.

Tiamo's energy system and infrastructure were designed by Jeff Oldham of Real Goods Design & Consulting Group. The relationship between Jeff, Mike and Petagay was critical to the resort's complete reliance on alternative energy. "This is one of, if not the, top eco-resort in the world, and they've won lots of awards," says Oldham, who has enormous respect for what the Hartmans have accomplished. Oldham has consulted with a number of eco-resorts around the world to solarize their operations. He notes that, "Installing PV systems in eco-resorts makes sense given the (often) remote locations of the resorts and their commitments to tread lightly on the land they utilize."

"We spent four years researching alternative energy before beginning to build," remembers Petagay. "Jeff was so patient, always helping with information and recommendations. With that kind of service we simply couldn't have gone anywhere else."

Guests have remarked that staying at this luxury eco-resort becomes a vacation for their consciences. Mike and Petagay conduct behind-the-scenes tours of the resort¹s alternative energy operations, and when guests gather to dine, international conversation and gourmet Caribbean cuisine are the highlights. The Hartmans ask local fishermen to catch only species that are in abundance, and they are looking into hydroponics for growing fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Setting an example for the local population is much more effective than overt pressure. "People don't want to be told they are doing something wrong," says Petagay.

The Hartmans continue to reduce their impact. They sponsor research scientists and participate in programs to educate children and adults. They're also working with community leaders on the South Andros Island Preservation Initiative. With such dedication, it's no wonder the Hartmans named their resort Tiamo, meaning, I love you. Recognition for Commitment to the renewable energy Industry

article_greenpioneerawardJohn Schaeffer has received the 2007 Green Power Pioneer Award from the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) for helping bring renewable energy products to a much wider mainstream market. The annual national award recognizes individual renewable energy leaders that have demonstrated leadership by working to build the market for green power.

The 2007 Green Power Pioneer Market Development Award was presented to Schaeffer at an awards event, Monday evening, October 22nd, in conjunction with the Twelfth National renewable energy Marketing Conference taking place in Philadelphia this week. Schaeffer sold the very first photovoltaic (PV) solar panel in the world at retail in 1978 from the first Real Goods store (now Gaiam Real Goods) currently located in Hopland, California. For the past 30 years, Schaeffer has continued to sell solar and renewable energy supplies from the Real Goods catalogs & store at the Solar Living Center in Hopland, CA.

Schaeffer’s company, Gaiam Real Goods, has solarized over 60,000 homes and has grown into one of the foremost global sources for tools and information on renewable energy and sustainable living. He is the editor of the Real Goods Solar Living Source Book and he also founded the educational non-profit Solar Living Institute, dedicated to promoting renewable energy through inspirational environmental education.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious Green Power Pioneer Award from the Center for Resource Solutions. It's gratifying to know that Solar Energy has finally reached the mainstream. It has been 30 long years since Real Goods sold the very first PV panel in the U.S.,” said John Schaeffer, Founder & President, Real Goods.

The Center for Resource Solutions’ Market Development Awards recognized efforts to build the green power marketplace and advance the renewable energy industry. A seven-person selection committee reviewed nominations in three categories of Market Development Awards: Green Power Beacon for innovative marketing; Green Power Pilot for cutting-edge outreach efforts and Green Power Pioneer Award for continuous individual achievement. CRS presented awards to one organization, one company and two individuals that have shown outstanding leadership in building and shaping the market for renewable energy.

“The Center for Resource Solutions is proud to honor John Schaeffer, whose efforts to move the market forward for renewable energy is transforming the electricity sector with far reaching benefits for all of us," said Jan Hamrin, president of the Center for Resource Solutions. “John Schaffer exemplifies what the Pioneer Award is all about; his efforts show commitment, innovation and dedication to creating a more sustainable world.”

The Twelfth National renewable energy Marketing Conference, is the industry’s biggest annual gathering attended by leading renewable energy and green power industry stakeholders.

article_DwellPlayhouseImagine what joy kids (and grownups, too) could have in a solar-powered playhouse. Thanks to Real Goods, Dwell magazine and a team of goodhearted folks, some lucky children are about to find out.

Invited by Dwell magazine to design an eco/sustainable play/climbing house, California Architect Jonathan Davis contacted Real Goods President and Founder John Schaeffer to see if Real Goods wanted to get in on the fun. The result is that Real Goods designed a 12V solar system that shades the playhouse and also charges the battery system that powers LED lighting throughout the house. Real Goods also donated four 232aH batteries and system components to the project.

Built as an educational demonstration project as well as to provide hours of amusement, the playhouse is set up so that kids can clearly understand how solar power is generated, stored and distributed throughout the house.

Named the Little e by Davis, the playhouse is on display until June at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California. On June 6, it will be auctioned off with other unique, life-size children’s playhouses at the Dreams Happen fundraising event, and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Peninsula, the northern California chapter of a national nonprofit committed to improving living conditions for those in need.

SANTA CRUZ, CA—The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors and the Santa Cruz City Council each voted unanimously yesterday to advance an Energy Independence & Economic Stimulus Initiative program to provide residential property owners with special financing options to install energy generation improvements, as well as provide economic stimulus for the region’s nascent green economy. The program will help the City and County of Santa Cruz to make significant progress toward needed reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while providing investment in the local economy, two goals that are consistent with the Climate Action Compact of 2008, a regional commitment initiated by the City and County of Santa Cruz and the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Supported by a growing community partnership currently consisting of the City and County of Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Community Credit Union (SCCCU), local solar companies and Ecology Action, the rollout of the initiative includes two phases:

Phase 1—“Get Green Loan Program” for solar panel installation and energy efficiency improvements

  • Available immediately and provided initially by SCCCU
  • Program enables property owners to install energy-efficient improvements, financed at a low interest rate.
  • Program participants to be first in line to transfer into the City/County program (see below) if they wish and are eligible.
  • Get Green Loan Program financing terms include:
    • Maximum loan amount up to $75,000
    • Fixed rate of 9.0% APR
    • Term loans up to 15 years
    • Eligible equipment includes:
    • Solar PV
    • Solar thermal (hot water)
    • High efficiency HVAC
    • Rain water catchment systems
    • Energy efficient roofs (as defined by City and County Building Departments)

Phase 2—“Santa Cruz Energy Efficiency Program” pilot special finance districts in the City and County of Santa Cruz

  • City and County staff will continue to investigate the appropriate mechanisms to establish a Santa Cruz Solar Finance District.
  • Any district would enable residential property owners to install solar panels and/or solar thermal hot water heaters through an opt-in process and pay for the project through a 20-year special tax assessment on their property tax bill.
  • Any pilot program would need to carry no risk to local government budgets and would be financed by taxable municipal bonds, similar to projects established in Berkeley and Boulder, Colorado.
  • Property owners who are current on their property tax payments and mortgage payments will be able to install solar projects with little upfront costs.
  • Staffing costs associated with Phase 2 may be underwritten and supported by local community partners including Independent Energy Systems [now part of Real Goods Solar], Solar Technologies and Ecology Action, as well as potential federal stimulus funds.
“This is a win-win for our county because it would infuse millions of dollars in our local economy while also making good progress toward climate change goals,” said Neal Coonerty, chair of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. “This is exactly the kind of innovation and public-private partnership we need to support.”

“We want to find a cost-neutral way to support this important initiative because it provides an innovative mechanism to invest in our local green economy,” said Cynthia Mathews, mayor of the City of Santa Cruz.

“This innovative concept is a cutting edge policy that can immediately benefit the public and provide an economic boost to the solar industry,” said Mark Stone, Santa Cruz County Supervisor.

“If we’re going to truly make progress on our regional goal for building a stronger green economy, it’s going to take initiatives such as this one,” said Virginia Johnson, CEO of Ecology Action. “Implementation of this initiative sends a clear signal that Santa Cruz County’s local governments, business community and non-governmental partners are committed to innovation when it comes to energy and our economy.”

50 disadvantaged kids discover solar at Earth Day for Kids

article_innercitykidsOn Earth Day 2006 some powerful learning took place at the Solar Living Institute (SLI) in Hopland, California. Seeds of hope and change were planted as 50 inner-city kids from San Francisco’s Bret Harte School took a cost-free field trip to SLI’s lush, 12-acre campus 95 miles north of the city. Eighty percent of the kids had never even been north of the Golden Gate Bridge before.

The kids discovered renewable energy as they rode SLI’s solar-powered merry-go-round, planted seedlings and learned about worm composting, played in straw and mud, learned about biodiesel fuel, and generated electricity by pedaling a stationary bicycle. Many of these kids come from unemployed or very low income, single-parent households and don’t have much exposure to the natural world, let alone recycling, biofuels, permaculture, solar power or global warming.

“While most of the kids got off the bus in wide-eyed wonder, others were hardened at first, with detached attitudes,” recalls SLI Programs Director Doron Amiran. “But by the end of the day, they had softened and were diving into the mud and chomping solar-oven baked cookies. We were able to achieve an incredible transformation with these kids.”

The entire cost of the field trip was funded through customer purchases of Gaiam Real Goods products including eco-educational toys, Solar Living Sourcebooks, Gaiam Real Goods Eco Gear and Gaiam organic cotton Thoughtful Tees. Ten to 15 percent of the purchase of each item went directly to Earth Day for Kids.

“Our thanks go out to Gaiam Real Goods customers who donated generously so that these kids could have a day to experience the sustainable future and to travel all the way from San Francisco to Hopland,” says Gaiam Real Goods and SLI Founder John Schaeffer. Gaiam Real Goods’ goal is to sponsor 250 kids on Earth Day 2007 at a substantially higher cost. You can help by giving meaningful gifts, and helping economically disadvantaged kids discover the power to change.
